Before reading this, I was so mentally set on Lady and Woman being interchangeable that I didn't even realize that was going to the topic based on the thread title & gif.

But I don't think you're correct about women being subjugated/oppressed historically. Both genders were equally trapped in their roles as a matter of biology, and it is women who were given priority in shelter and protection. A thousand years in the past, I'd much rather keep a house and enjoy a higher life expectancy than work myself to death or get sent off to war. Please correct me if I'm wrong

In the Western World, we are a product of many centuries of Christian societies. You don't have to be a theologist to understand that Christianity has demonised, minimised and marginalised women in the entirety of its evolution as a religion. Certainly since St Paul arrived on the scene.

You can argue that women have been "safer", due to chivalric protection... but if liberty means anything to you, the ability of self-determination (denied to women) is more important than being a favourite pet, whose master looks after it.

But then the implication is that men did have their self-determination when forced into their gender role.
